Why do you need a pregnancy ultrasound?

Pregnancy tests are not always 100% accurate regardless of whether the test is an over-the-counter product or a commercial one. Therefore, once you have a positive test result, the next step is to have an ultrasound to confirm your pregnancy. An ultrasound also helps determine more accurately how far along you are. The average duration of pregnancy is 38-42 weeks and is divided into 3 trimesters. The first trimester is from the day of conception to 12 weeks. Trimester 2 is from 13 weeks to 26 weeks. Trimester 3 is from 26 weeks to birth.

What is a pregnancy ultrasound?

An obstetric ultrasound is a procedure in which high frequency sound waves project an image (sonogram) to a monitor. The ultrasound of your pelvis produces an image of the baby in the uterus. Limited obstetric ultrasounds are non-invasive and safe. They are designed to determine a number of factors in confirming a pregnancy. In addition, they make sure there are no possible risks for you, such as an ectopic pregnancy, that may require further examination. Appropriate use of an ultrasound poses no physical risk to you or your baby.

How is a pregnancy ultrasound done?

We provide limited, obstetric ultrasounds in our Santa Fe center that are performed by a licensed, medical professional known as a sonographer. You will be asked to drink 64 oz of water prior to the ultrasound to ensure that your bladder is full enough to gain a clear picture of your uterus. During the ultrasound, a gel is applied to your abdomen and then a probe, which passes sound waves into your uterus, is gently moved over the outside of your stomach. An image of the baby will be projected onto a monitor while you watch. The sonographer will explain what you are seeing throughout the procedure. All ultrasounds are then reviewed by a medical doctor.
